I guess you'll be wanting some customers for that web site of yours....

Well [insert exaggerated statistic] % of internet users find what they are looking for by searching in either Google, Yahoo, Bing or some other search engine or directory.

'Search Engine Marketing' is a term that covers the strategies you can use to put your web site in front of the people who are searching for your product or service.

Essentially there are two ways to get web site traffic from search engines:

Search Engine Optimisation - A whole new marketing industry called 'Search Engine Optimisation' (SEO) has grown up over the last 10+ years or so based on getting your web site on the first page of search engine results. Now some of the services you will find are no doubt legit and value for money, but the pool is also FULL of sharks, incompetents, and the deluded.....[more]

Pay Per Click - A little company that I can't quite remember the name of (Go-something..) initiated a process where web site owners could bid for the placement of sites listing display in the search results in response to the search keywords, and pay whatever the bid was when someone clicked through to their web site from the listing. This company went on to become 'Overture' and was later purchased by Yahoo. The bid for listing placement and pay for the click business model went berserk when a little company with big dreams and no cash flow called Google launched 'Adwords' in about 2002. Their model was bidding for the placement of your 'ads' in little square boxes down the right hand side of the search results.....[more]

So where do you start?

If you have an Australian business, then there are 3 things that I recommend that you do:

  1. Make sure your web site design is search engine friendly
  2. Install Google Analytics on every page of your web site
  3. Set up a webmaster account with Google, Yahoo, Bing
  4. Install Google, Yahoo, Bing tracking code on your web pages
  5. Build yourself a sitemap
  6. Undertake a keyword analysis and prepare a content development plan
  7. Engage an outsourcer to write (draft) content based on your identified keywords
  8. Write good meta tags for every page of your web site
  9. Start a blog and build the feed into your web site
  10. Start a free newsletter on your web site, linking to your blog, to help retain the new audience once they start finding you
  11. Submit your sitemap to Google, Yahoo, Bing
  12. List your site in major 'human edited' directories
  13. List your site in quality Australian based directories
  14. List Your site in quality International directories
  15. List your site in any specific country or industry directories

Ok so that's not 3 things is it.....

The good news is that I can do these things for you, or if you are really keen on doing it all yourself, I can also show you how to do it. But be warned I will probably try to give you a copy of a Michael Gerber book though....

Over the years, I have seen some fantastic results in the businesses that I have worked with just by getting some pretty basic things right. The best thing is that once you have got it right, apart from a bit of maintenance, there are no ongoing costs. I have web sites that are still pulling traffic from search engine optimisation work that I did in 1999........Free customer leads for 10 years, sounds ok doesn't it?
